Guess what? No one is perfect. No one. Not even you. So when you meet a compatible partner on a dating website, you should be very thankful for the mutual compatibility and the qualities he has that turn you on. Obviously, he will also possess certain characteristics that you may not care for. But you will probably have your own share of undesirable traits. If you accept the things you cannot change, you will be a much happier person. If you continually try to change certain qualities about your dating website partner, you will be fighting an uphill battle. Don’t let resentment build simply because he isn’t ideal.

You have to pick your battles. There are plenty of idiosyncrasies that your partner may have that really aren’t too terrible. Sometimes you have to look the other way, or laugh at his odd habits. But they certainly do not have to be deal breakers. If he tells you he doesn’t want to get married, then you have to believe him. If he tells you he doesn’t ever want children, you have to believe him. These are some examples of things he cannot and won’t change. If he is a laid-back, mellow kind of guy and you’re looking for a sophisticated man-about-town, he’s not going to change, and it’s wrong and unfair of you to try and turn him into someone he’s not.

If your new guy has been single for awhile and living on his own, he may have certain habits that you’re not too crazy about. If he cares about you, and you are able to point out some of these things (gently—without sounding too harsh) he may be able to turn himself around. Maybe he’s a bit sloppy because he’s not used to having anyone else to answer to. If he knows it bothers you to come over to his messy house, this is something he may be willing to change. However, if this man is, for example, a die-hard smoker and you cannot abide smoking, it may be a bit more difficult for him to leave the cigarettes behind. And if he doesn’t want to quit smoking, it may be wrong of you to ask him to do so. Yes, it would be healthier, but people cannot make a change unless they want to.

In the long run, if the good outweighs the bad, then you need to be willing to compromise and put up with the things that are less than ideal. Look at all his good qualities; is he a good person that has similar values as yours? This is what is most important for a long-term relationship. Everyone has their own quirks and as previously mentioned no one is perfect. So don’t put the guy on a pedestal; cut him some slack and let him be who he is, flaws and all. Obviously, you want him to do the same for you, and if you’re able to do that for one another, this will be the great start to a wonderful relationship.
